Even cash van thief didn’t want new Rs.2,000 notes

Exchanging the new Rs 2,000 currency notes in the market these days seem to need more grit than pulling off a Rs 1.37 crore heist. At least this is what it seems to be as Dominique Roy, the van driver suspected of speeding away in a cash-laden van on Wednesday afternoon chose to leave behind Rs 45 lakh all in Rs 2,000 denomination in the vehicle before abandoning it at Vasanth Nagar here in the city .

He also left behind the firearm that was issued to the security guard escorting the cash consignment from various banks. The vehicle was found abandoned near Mount Carmel College since Wednesday and some local residents informed the police. Four special teams have been formed to trace and arrest Dominique at the earliest.

"After the incident, a message was sent for the entire city police to be on high alert and catch the suspected cash carrying the vehicle. High Grounds police traced the vehicle near Mount Carmel College in Vasanth Nagar and passed the information to us. On reaching the spot we learnt that there was a weapon (rifle) of the security guard and Rs 45 lakh in the vehicle", said MN Anucheth, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru (West).

According to police, Dominique might have abandoned the vehicle and decamped with the remaining cash of Rs 92 lakh soon after he sped away with the vehicle from KG Road when the security guard accompanying took a loo break at around 2.10 pm on Wednesday.

They also added that there were numerous security lapses on part of the agency entrusted with cash transport as none of the cash chests had digital locks and there was also no GPS tracking support system installed in the vehicle to track its route. Police said that Dominique Roy was associated with Secure Transit services, an agency supplying manpower and vehicles to cash management agencies that tie up with banks in the city. Police are now questioning employees of Secure Transit services, Logicash Solutions Private Limited for further leads to nab Dominic and also to ascertain whether he had any accomplices among them to pull off the daring crime.

"We are questioning few suspects, but have not arrested anyone so far," Anucheth said.

Police on Wednesday at around 3 pm conducted a raid on Dominique's house and found his wife along with 12-year-old son was absconding. Police suspect that Dominique has been hiding along with his wife and son, police suspect.
