3 Soldiers killed, 4 injured after blast hits army vehicle in Assam's Tinsukia

Digboi: At least three soldiers were killed and four injured after a powerful blast hit an army vehicle in Digboi in Tinsukia district of Assam, an official said.

The incident took place at around 5.30 am, in the Pengeri area, Defence public relations officer Lt. Col. Suneet Newton said.

"They (the terrorists) had planted an improvised explosive device (IED) on the road. When the IED exploded, the convoy stopped. Then the terrorists fired indiscriminately," Newton said. The injured soldiers were taken to a hospital, he said.

The attack on convoy triggered an encounter between the security forces and suspected terrorists. The injured soldiers were evacuated to a military hospital where three of them died of their injuries.

Condemning the attack, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said: "the perpetrators will be punished".

Home Minister Rajnath Singh was apprised of the security situation after the blast. "Deeply anguished to learn of the death of Army soldiers in a blast in Tinsukia. I pray for the speedy recovery of our injured soldiers," the home minister tweeted this morning.

Search operations are being conducted in the area to locate the terrorists.

On Wednesday, terrorists attacked a van of the Pengeri tea estate killing one person and injuring two others.
