Single mother attempts suicide before District Collectorate due to non-issuance of ration card

Meena, a single mother of two children 9-year-old daughter Mounica and 7-year-old son Mithun resides near the Milk Company near the Thadagam bus station in Coimbatore. It has been reported that Meera has applied for her ration card seven years ago and despite making repeated requests to the collector's office and the taluk office, her ration card has not been issued till date.

Due to the lack of the ration card, Meena alleges that she is unable to obtain her community certificate. Furthermore, this single mother also said that due to the lack of ration card she is unable to avail benefits and grants to treat her child Mounica who is suffering from a heart disease.



All this prompted Meena to take the extreme step, at the District Collectorate but she was saved by prompt officials on duty. It has been reported that this morning Meena who visited the District Collectorate attempted suicide by inflicting injuries to self, using a knife. Security personnel on duty at the premises prevented this suicide attempt and administered first-aid.



Meena also interacted with the concerned officials who assured her that swift action will be taken to ensure that her ration card is issued. An injured Meena was rushed to the Coimbatore Government Hospital (GH) for treatment. Following this incident the District Collectorate remained tensed.
