Traders should refrain from using plastic less than 50 microns, says CCMC Special Officer


Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner and Presiding Officer Dr. K.Vijayakarthikeyan has issued a statement stating that shops which use plastic bags which are less than 50microns in thickness will be identified and strict action will be taken against the respective shop owners.

A press release, issued by the corporation commissioner stated “Environmental damage due to plastics is increasing day by day in our district. Improper disposal of single-use plastics products like plastics bags, plastic tumblers, plates coated with plastic, plastic plates used in eateries are disposed in an improper way by people. As they are non-biodegradable they pose danger to the environment.”

The press release also stated that Coimbatore Corporation is taking many steps to curb the usage of plastic in many forms. As part of the initiative an inspection was conducted yesterday (on Tuesday) by a team led by the assistant welfare officer for Coimbatore and Health Inspector at a wholesale plastic dealers premises in Sundarapuram. During this inspection, about 450-kgs of plastic which is less than 50 microns were confiscated.

The statement also pointed out that surprise checks will be conducted at all the shops selling plastic products in the city. If shops are found selling banned plastic products a fine will be levied and action will be initiated.
