In connection with the announcement made by Corporation Commissioner Dr. Vijaya Karthikeyan yesterday that people can pay their corporation taxes like property tax, water tax and professional tax today using old 500 and 1000 denominations, the response from the public has been amazing at most of the zonal collection centres.
The zonal centres across the city started witnessing footfalls as early as 7 am in the morning. Officials have shared that since 12 pm, 3 crores pending taxes have been collected. Out of the receipt, 1.83 crore of property tax has been collected.
A person who came to pay his tax when said, “A lot of people have come to corporation office to pay their taxes. We have come to pay electricity bills and property tax. Allowing to pay taxes using the 500 and 1000 rupees currency is a welcome move by the Coimbatore corporation. But the time provided by the corporation is very short. The information has not reached many. Many people have changed their currency in banks and post offices and are now waiting here to pay their taxes. People would have benefitted if this announcement had been made earlier. Also, additional arrangements should have been made to receive the taxes.”
