Chennai Metro Rail to accept Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes

Commuters taking the metro trains in Chennai can now heave a sigh of relief as demonetised Rs 500 and 1,000 currency notes will be accepted at all stations till Friday night.

A Chennai Metro Rail official said Rs 500 and 1,000 currency notes would be accepted from commuters provided there is enough change to return at metro stations. "We will follow government's directive," the official said.

Announcing demonetization of the notes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said they would be accepted at certain public utilities - like petrol bunks and hospitals - for 72 hours (till Friday night).
