Help make Sabarimala plastic-free: Pinarayi

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has urged the neighbouring States to come forward to organise awareness campaigns in their own languages to make pilgrims to Sabarimala aware of the need to keep the place free of plastic.

While inaugurating the meeting of Ministers of Southern States in connection with the Sabarimala pilgrimage here on Tuesday, Mr. Vijayan said the Kerala government would ensure safe drinking water, safe journey, trouble-free darshan and clean environment to all pilgrims.

Many bring plastic bottles so that they could have safe drinking water. Steps have been taken by the Sabarimala master plan high-level committee and the Dewaswom Board to provide safe drinking water to pilgrims and to set up drinking water kiosks wherever necessary, Mr. Vijayan said.

Special Sabarimala information centres should be set up in the capitals of all South Indian States for better coordination and interaction during emergencies, Mr. Vijayan said.

Ecologically fragile

Sabarimala is an ecologically fragile area and it is the duty of every pilgrim to protect it.

Though a plastic ban has been imposed in the region, pilgrims continued to bring plastic and litter the place, endangering wildlife too.
