Three women drowned to death at Samathur, Pollachi

In a farm land in Jothi Muthu Thottam in Samathur near Pollachi, farm land owners Gopalaswami and his wife Balamani (57) also raised cattle. Balamani along with her neighbours Bhagyam (50) and Mallika (45) went to collect fodder for the cattle in this area.

While Balamani, attempted to pluck leaves from a tree, she lost her balance and fell into a 50-feet well. The two women who accompanied her, in a bid to save Balamani, jumped in the canal. It has been reported that none of them knew how to swim. Unfortunately, all the three women drowned in this canal which had water up to 20-feet.

When passers-by noticed the bodies of the two women floating in the canal they informed the police. The bodies of Balamani and Bhagyam were retrieved. A search was launched by the fire and rescue personnel to recover Mallika's corpse. After a brief struggle, her body was also retrieved.

The bodies of the deceased were sent to Government Hospital in Pollachi for post-mortem examination. The death of three women of the same locale has created shock waves amongst the villagers, who are struck in grief.  A case has been registered and the police are investigating to ascertain the facts behind the incident.
