The industry associations of Coimbatore and Tiruppur managed to squeeze
in an opportunity to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit
on Tuesday here.
The association submitted memorandums to Modi seeking policy decisions that would give a boost to industry and develop the region.
Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI)'s vice-president Vanitha Mohan met the Prime Minister at the ESI Medical College and Hospital and submitted a memorandum on behalf of the association.
The memorandum urges the Prime Minister to set up a Central University in the city, for which the Centre had made announcements in 2008. It also asks for a National Investment and Manufacturing Zone that will benefit Coimbatore's industries.
The Ihas also asked for better international flight connectivity, especially to Dubai and Sri Lanka. They also want Coimbatore Airport to be named after famous Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar. Besides this, the ICCI has urged for speeding up the expansion of the airport which is a long-pending issue.
The industry association asked Modi to set up a mass rapid transport system in Coimbatore. The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), in their memorandum, said that they want better road connectivity: expansion of Chengapalli to Walayar, and four-laning of the Dindigul- Bengaluru national highway.
The CII has also asked for a ring road in the city that would reduce traffic congestion, as vehicles passing by Coimbatore would not have to enter the city.
They have also asked for additional Air India flights from the city to Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. At present there is one flight that operates from New Delhi that stops at Mumbai and then comes to Coimbatore and flies to Kozhikode.
