Coimbatore: The iconic North Coimbatore Clock Tower located near the North Coimbatore Flyover was renovated and inaugurated by Round table, Coimbatore here on Tuesday.
Over the last 10 months, the Round Tables of Coimbatore jointly decided to take up renovation of the clock tower in North Coimbatore. In addition to the seed fund available with the tables, they pulled in the support of contributions from various sponsors from Coimbatore.
According to the press release from RTE, the renovation work was completed in the beginning of November with coordinated efforts from all the Round Tables of Coimbatore in association with Coimbatore Corporation.

Today we can see GPS controlled electrical analogue clocks so the time on all sides always shows the same. Also, the tower has been aesthetically beautified.

J. Sravan Kumar, CCMC Commissioner who inaugurated the clock tower lauded the efforts of round table for putting efforts to restore the iconic symbol of this city. He pointed that Coimbatore stands 1st in all the 11 smart cities in Tamil Nadu and the 5th best smart city in India.
"The city of Coimbatore is blessed to have such volunteering organization whose passion for the city is commendable. The coordinated efforts of NGOs can assist the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation to understand the needs of the people and serve them in a better way. the expectations of the people. Currently Rs.10,000 crores worth of projects are underway in the city, out of which Rs.1000 crore worth are towards Smart city projects", the Commissioner said.
He also noted that "Shortly, the airport expansion project will commence and pave way for business expansion and connectivity. The initial will also generate job opportunities in the district."
Briefing on the 24/7 water distribution project, he said, "The baseless rumours and fear that were instilled among people will be changed forever after the implementation of the project."
He also added after beautifying the lake bunds, they would prove to be an additional recreational spot for the public to spend their evenings.
The Commissioner also recalled the 90 years lease by CCMC for Kurichi lake. The Kurichi lake will be rejuvenated at a cost of Rs.52 crore, under the smart city project.
“Name anything for city development, we are on it” said the CCMC Commissioner and elucidated on the ongoing plans for the City.
Commending the contribution by Round table as "Smaller Interventions means a lot”, he lauded them for their continued efforts in building educational infrastructure and construction of toilets for schools through its FTE Project in the rural and suburban regions of Coimbatore.

History of the Round Table India clock tower:
The iconic North Coimbatore Clock Tower located near the North Coimbatore Flyover on Mettupalayam road has been a landmark of our City for decades. This structure was built by the Round Tables of Coimbatore City in the year 1994, with the idea of creating an aesthetically appealing landmark for our City that will stand the test of time and at the same time be useful.
The tower was built and inaugurated to coincide with the National AGM of Round Table India which was hosted by Coimbatore that year. It was inaugurated by the then Corporation Commissioner Shri. C. Chandramouli on 30th December, 1994. Since then the Round Tables of Coimbatore (falling under the Umbrella of ROUND TABLE INDIA) have been maintaining this Clock Tower
