Revenue officials go on strike

A section of officers and staff in the Revenue Department across the district began their two-day strike on Tuesday pressing for charter of demands.

The state general secretary of Tamil Nadu Revenue Officials Association (TNROA)D. Sivajothi said that more than 10,000 staff across the State took part in the strike.

The demands included hike in salary, various allowances, filling up the nearly 6,000 vacancies from the post of office assistant to Tahsildar across Tamil Nadu. He also said that there are hundreds of temporary staff working in the election section and special scheme implementation section and that their jobs should be regularised.

Mr. Sivajothi said that they want the Chief Minister to intervene and facilitate talks between the association representatives and the Finance Secretary to fulfil their demands.

The strike affected issuance of community, income and other certificates, and electoral roll related works. According to the association representatives, a section of the revenue department staff alone went on strike in Coimbatore on Tuesday as others were on duty for the Prime Minister’s visit.

In Tirupur, as many as 273 out of the 301 revenue department officials from the rank of office assistant to Tahsildar struck work in the district on Tuesday. “We are asking for pay revisions, filling up of vacancies in the department and special pay of Rs. 400 to all record clerks and office assistants, among other demands”, S. Murugadoss, Tahsildar and district secretary of Tamil Nadu Revenue Officials Association.
