3 held for attacking man with blade

A man was attacked with a blade by a three-member gang that also harassed his wife on Friday. The 28-year-old man from Podanur was in front of the Coimbatore railway junction when three men began harassing his wife and snatched 500 from her. When he tried to protect his wife, the gang assaulted him with a blade. He is now recovering at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).

Government Railway police (GRP), Coimbatore, arrested the three attackers on Friday morning. They were identified as P Selvam, 23, A Karthick, 27, both were hailing from Madurai district and G Sampath, 19 from Eachanari in Coimbatore.

The trio already faces a few robbery cases in Coimbatore city.

Police said, S Ansar alias Ansaruddin, 28, from Karpagam temple street near Podanur, was sleeping along with his wife Sumathi, 25 and his son in front of an ATM centre near the entrance of the Coimbatore railway junction at 10pm on Thursday.

He had got married a few years ago and worked as a welder to support the family. Since it was a love marriage, both families did not accept their relationship, forcing the couple to live at the entrance of the city railway junction.

The gang got into an argument with Ansar and attempted to assault him. His wife Sumathi intervened immediately and she was also harassed by the three-member gang. Ansar was attacked on his right cheek with a blade. He was rushed for treatment to CMCH. The gang also snatched Rs500 from his wife.

Ansar lodged a complaint with GRP inspector B Manikandan who registered a case against the trio under section 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) of the Indian Penal Code.

Police arrested the trio Selvam, Karthick and Sampath and seized 500 from them. They were later produced before a judicial magistrate.

Later, Selvam and Karthick were sent to Coimbatore central prison and Sampath was sent to the borstal school in Pollachi.
