Farmers raise concern on the checkdam issue at Siruvani

At the farmer's redressal meet at the Collectorate, the farmers jointly raised their concern on the Kerala government's recent initiative to construct a check dam at Attapadi across the Siruvani river.

Siruvani, the branch river of Bhavani has been the prime water source for the people and the farmers across the areas of Kongu Region - Coimbatore, Mettupalayam, Tirupur, and Erode. The river originates at the western ghats and travels through Kerala (Attapadi) and amalgamates at the Bhavani-river, Koduthurai of Tamil Nadu.

The farmers alleged on the negligence of the Tamilnadu State Government in responding to the Kerala Government's letters on the check dam issue. On April 2016, the letters issued by Kerala Government's water board and environmental departments on the check dam issue have not been duly responded by the TN state officials, they alleged.

The continuous negligence by the TN state officials has clued the Kerala Government to escalate the issue to the Central Government to seek approvals to go ahead with their project. Currently, the Kerala Government has obtained the required permissions and approvals from the Central Govt's Environmental and forest departments, to kick start the dam project.

If the check dam is constructed, the water flow from Siruvani river to the lower Bhavani dam would be adversely affected, they grieved. Hence the farmers have jointly petitioned the District Collector to escalate the issue to the State Government and necessitate steps to stop the efforts of the Kerala Government.
