Farmers protest against construction of godown

Farmers from Sirukinar hamlet near Dharapuram and their kin made a representation to the District Collector on Monday in which they alleged that the construction of a godown to store explosive materials had commenced in their locality.

V. Krishnan, one of the petitioners, said if such a facility get commissioned in the area, it could pose a threat to the safety of the agrarian community and also affect the crops and cattle since chemicals could spread while handling/storing the explosives meant for quarry related activities.

According to the farmers, rain-fed agriculture dominates the area and earnings are thus seasonal. “In this scenario, any activity that could hamper agriculture and allied activities such as cattle rearing should not be allowed”, they said.

Agitation

In another issue related to water supply, a section of residents from Adi Dravidar Colony at Appiapalayam hamlet under Ettiveerampalayam staged a sit-in protest inside the Collectorate building. They blocked the entrance for almost half an hour alleging that drinking water was not supplied regularly for the past many months. The crowd moved away only after the officials assured to rectify the issue.
