Coimbatore, January 24
From public transport stations to government buildings, differently-abled persons in Coimbatore are in for a tough time manoeuvring through as most of public constructions have denied to considered accessibility to such people.

The Coimbatore Central Junction is one among such places where the differently ablest are forced to cross the tracks using a dangerous pathway to reach different platforms, whereas normal people can easily use the steps. Lack of ramp, lift and escalators are proving not only worrisome but also dangerous for differently-abled passengers as they are forced to cross railway tracks.

“Recently I went to the junction to receive a friend who came to Coimbatore. I managed to enter in using the ramp with my wheelchair. But I could not access the platform as the escalator was not working. When I enquired about it, people asked me to use the track crossing path used by goods carriers,” said Jagadeesh.
He also pondered that the ramp in differently-abled Welfare Office at Coimbatore Central Zone Office is used as dress dryer. “Hundreds of differently-abled people visit the Office for various reasons daily, but the building is not at all friendly to them inconveniencing them at every corner,” another person complained.

Ganeshan from Gandhipuram said that a ramp that was constructed before some time at the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation Office is still not completed and is not ready to be used.
“Not only this ramp, most of the buildings in Coimbatore should have differently-abled friendly environment,” he opined.
