The local people of Valparai are in for a big shock as one of the famous female elephants that was roaming in the vicinity for more than ten years died after a reported fight with a male elephant in the late hours yesterday here.
The carcass of the elephant named “Singari”, was retrieved from the U.T Division 10 Forest near residential colonies.
The incident came to light when local people alerted forest personnel of some commotion in the area yesterday night. The team arrived and tried to drive away two elephants including a male and female that were reportedly fighting there.
Even as the male elephant moved away, the female was injured in the fight and lied down near a canal. The animal aged around 50 succumbed to injuries and died a few hours later.
The elephant was a famous visitor to Valparai and was always found near human settlements. The elephant reportedly has no record of involving in conflict with humans and was a favourite of the people of Valparai.
