In an attempt to Improve the knowledge of the school teachers and cousellors who are working for children affected by drug abuse, A three days ‘Capacity Building Programme on Children Affected by Drugs Abuse’ was inaugurated here at Hindustan College of Arts and Science today.
Jointly organised by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment of the Government of India and PG and Research Department of Social Work, the workshop would also aim at developing and improving the skills especially required for children affected by drug abuse.
Around 40 teachers and cousellors from various organisations around Tamil Nadu are participating in the workshop that was earlier inaugurated by Sarasuwathi Khannaiyann, Managing Trustee of Hindustan Educational and Charitable Trust that runs the College.
According to the organisers, one of the objective of the workshop would be to conduct in-service training to enhance the knowledge and skill to treat the vulnerable children.
They claim that India has witnessed a five-time increase in drug hauls over three years, from 2011 to 2013, according to data released by the Centre to Parliament. Officials have seized 105,173 tonsi of illegal drugs over this period.
“The latest available data, from 2004, estimates that 10.7 million Indians more than the population of Sweden are drug users: 8.7 million consume cannabis and 2 million use opiates, according to a National Survey Report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and the Indian Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment,” said an organiser.
Since adolescent boys are likely vulnerable to such addictions, they would be the target audience of the outcomes of programmes as these.
