Body-worn cameras, the next logical step in effective policing on the city roads?

The city police are contemplating to introduce “body- worn camera" among its traffic police force who are manning various traffic junctions and points in the city’s road network all day.

Coimbatore, Jan. 13

The city police are contemplating to introduce “body- worn camera" among its traffic police force who are deployed in manning various traffic junctions and vantage points in the city’s road network through the day.

The arrangement would help check malpractice by the police personnel who are in the habit of getting graft from traffic offenders and also would help keep a record of frequent road violations and violators.

The body-worn camera would record every single moment of action of the police personnel on duty and it could be downloaded from the control room. The recordings could not be erased by a third party.

“Presently all the 12 city corporations in Tamilnadu are provided with the tech equipment on a pilot basis, and Tirunelveli police have already started using the modern gadget,” say Police sources.

When asked about body-worn cameras, Sujit Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic wing) said “Presently, the whole exercise is on a trial phase. In due course, we would proceed with this new technology."
