Don’t burn plastic and tires during Bhogi bonfire, Collector appeals to the public

The general public is asked not to burn plastic products, tires and other polluting materials during Bhogi festival on the penultimate day of Pongal festival.

Exhorting the public to adhere to the rules, District collector in a statement has said “Even though it is ancient practice to make a bonfire of old things and materials on Bhogi day, burning plastics and other artificial products could harm both the health of the people and pollute the atmosphere in a big way.

“The toxic fumes emanating from the bonfire smoke could cause breathing ailments in the susceptible population and smog created by the smoke could affect flight operations in the city. “Said the collector in his statement.

The High court has laid down rules to this effect and according to the courts, no other material excepting old logs and cow dung cakes could be brunt in the Bhogi bonfire. “The statement from the collector said.
