Coimbatore, January 11
SP Velumani, Minister for Municipalities tabled a bill in the Tamilnadu Assembly facilitating for the direct election for the post of Mayor all the Municipal corporations in Tamilnadu.
The bill seeks to reintroduce the direct election of mayors for all the municipal corporations which was in practice before it was scrapped in 2016 when erstwhile chief minister Jayalalithaa was at the helm of affairs.
Instead of members of the municipal council consisting of councilors, the voters will be empowered to elect their Mayor if the bill is passed in the assembly and made into a law.
