“Never tease obese kids, but help them to overcome the health condition” was that the admonition actor Sivakarthikeyan handed down to the 5000 students gathered in VOC grounds today.



The ‘Velaikaran” actor, who is a big hit both with children and adults was in the city to inaugurate project namely “ Childhood Obesity Prevention Schools (COPS), which is aimed at creating a healthier young generation and teaching school kids to fight childhood obesity..

“Teasing obese kids would not be the right things to do; but if we help them to fight obesity, it would be a good gesture, “the young and energetic actor said.

Enthralling the audience at VOC grounds here he advised the school students not to eat junk food and to avoid drinking cool drinks.



 

“I gave up drinking cool drinks 7 to 8 years back and also refused to endorse soft drinks in commercials”, the actor said proudly. The ebullient actor also administered an oath on fighting obesity which was taken by 5000 students.

The project which is jointly conducted by Young Indians and Gem Hospitals will cover all schools in the district and measure obesity in kids and treatment follow up will be given to those kids. The project will be supported by Arc foundation and Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation.

Dr. Praveen Raj, Head of Department of Bariatric surgery Gem Hospital said, “One in five kids are affected by obesity, a lifestyle condition and this project is need of the hour. This project will cover all schools in Coimbatore for a period of two years.”



Dr. Vijayakarthikeyan, CCMC Commissioner said, “Students should lead a healthy lifestyle and they should also exercise daily”.

“A few students have complained that they don’t have parks and open spaces to play hence projects like happy streets were launched,” the CCMC Commissioner said.

A calendar by Career Zone titled ‘Unsung Heroes’ was also launched on the memorable occasion.
