"Utensil manufacturing cluster near Tiruppur ailing without government patronage"

The government should extend its patronage to utensil manufacturing cluster in and around Anuperpalayam in Tiruppur district, which has been ailing due to lack of government patronage.

Coimbatore, January 9

The government should extend its patronage to utensil manufacturing cluster in and around Anuperpalayam in Tiruppur district, which has been ailing due to lack of government patronage.

A cluster of villages including Anuperpalayam, Ammapalayam, and Angeripalayam was known for the utensil making which flourished a good 30 years back. Over 2000 units were busy making utensils in stainless steel, brass, and copper and churned out up to 5 lakh pieces per day. Over 20,000 people were employed in these units and it proved a major job generator of the region.

Moreover, the utensils gained popularity in overseas countries and were exported to USA, Japan, Singapore, and Srilanka.

However, the death knell to utensil manufacturing was sounded with the advent of hosiery units in Tiruppur and the workforce switched their loyalty to the new hosiery units as it offered them better wages.

Thanks to the migration of labor and workforce to other industries including hosiery units, the utensil making has fallen on evil days and is an ailing sector with only 200 functioning with a workforce of about just around 2,000 people

Manohar, a utensil manufacturer said that the youth and the new generation have opted for new avenues of employment and the demand for utensils have also fallen due to large-scale introduction of plastic products in the market.

The Government patronage to this sector is abysmally lacking and no loans for procurement of machinery is being extended to the new units despite the utensil manufacturing recognized by the Tamilnadu Labour Welfare Board.

The state government should come forward to extend patronage to the ailing sector and help the sector to bounce back to its heydays say the utensil manufacturers in one voice.
