Coimbatore, Jan. 06
Haunted by the reportedly ‘poor designs’ in the recently constructed flyovers in the city and the increasing traffic congestion, members of the Coimbatore Citizen’s Council (CCC), have decided to take a pro-active role in making better development designs and plans for the city.
Briefing media persons here, members of the recently formed CCC also claimed that they would involve the citizens in creating the proposals and also claimed that they would voice against projects that are not relevant for the city.
“The recently opened Gandhipuram flyover and Neelambur flyover have proved to be less useful to people. Such projects could have been avoided had the people of the city had a say in the plan,” said A.V. Varadharajan, Industrialist and former President of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore (ICCIC).
He further added that CCC would make amends for the mistakes of the past. “We have given various representations in the past regarding development projects. But often, such representations have been made by individuals or organizations. This time we have linked all NGOs, industrial bodies, experts and citizens under a common banner to voice as one,” he said.
Vanitha Mohan, President of ICCIC said that the plans that are to be prepared by the orgnaisation would take into consideration the next twenty years. “We are to form a committee of experts who are to study and come up with good proposals,” she opined.
Currently, pilot studies are to be taken up by CCC including thinking of possibilities of either a flyover or metro or both on Avinashi Road; redesigning the Gandhipuram flyover; the proposed flyover and the eastern by-pass for a flyover between Neelambur and Narasimmanaickenpalayam.
The committee formed by CCC is to study these projects and come up with possible solutions. More than 30 organisations are a part a of CCC.
