The 48-day annual elephant rejuvenation camp commenced here today at Mettupalayam. Sevur Ramachandran, HR &CE Minister inaugurated the camp at Thekkampatti near Mettupalayam.

Hosted by the HR& CE department the camp aims giving rejuvenation and rest to the temple and Mutt elephants from Tamilnadu and Puducherry.
This is the 10th year of the camp, which was originally started in Theppakadu in Mudumalai but later shifted to the plains considering the difficulty in transportation of elephants in a hilly terrain.

Presently the camp is being organized at Thekkampatti on the banks of river Bhavani. The new campsite had so far hosted five camps added to four camps in Mudumalai from 2003 to 2012.
As many as 33 elephants including 31 from Tamilnadu and 2 from Puducherry are taking part in the camp.

The campsite has been refurbished with elephant kitchen, feeding area for elephants, and watchtowers. A bathing area for elephants with shower facility and other amenities were made for the elephants in the camp.
Solar fences have been put up to fend of wild elephant depredation to the campsite, and the whole terrain is cleared with the help of earth movers to spot out any adventurous wild elephant visiting the camp after sensing female elephants presence in the camp.

Dindigul Srinivasan, State Forest minister and Commissioner of HR & CE took part in the camp inauguration.
