Coimbatore, January 03:

Kalyani, the elephant from Perur Patteeswarar temple was transported to Thekkampatti in Mettupalayam today, where she is to spend the next 48 days at the Elephant Rejuvenation camp with 33 elephants from various temples and mutts in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Kalyani was transported after special poojas on a truck today morning.

The camp is to be inaugurated tomorrow by the cabinet ministers of Tamil Nadu government.

According to officials, 27 temple elephants and five mutt elephants from Tamil Nadu and two temple elephants from Puducherry all belonging to the Hindu Religious and Charities Endowments (HR&CE) Board, will spend the 45 days at the camp.

The elephants will drop out of their regular routine of carrying out temple rituals and would be rested at the camp. They will be given physical activities and precious time to interact with other elephants in the camp.

Veterinarians are also posted at the camp to check on ill elephants. Usually temple elephants suffer from injuries on the soles of their legs caused by concrete floor. To treat such wounds special walking paths have been set up in the camp.

The elephants would also be given special food including jaggery and sugarcane. They would also be taken for walks and showers inside the campsite.

Meanwhile, farmers of Thekkampatti and nearby villages have claimed that the camp invariably invites wild elephants to the villages. They have given a representation to the District Administration in this regard.
