Three persons died on the spot and five others sustained serious injuries after their SUV in which they were traveling collided against a stationary truck in Thennampalayam near Sulur late on Sunday.
Rahul of Namakkal who was studying in an engineering college in the city was headed to Coimbatore with his friends in his SUV for New Year celebrations, when the mishap occurred.
While three of them, Rahul, Prasad, and Dhilip died on the spot, the critically injured Thyagu was admitted to Coimbatore Medical College hospital (CMCH) for treatment. Other injured, Naveen, Saddam Hussein and Suresh were rushed to a private hospital for treatment.
In the meanwhile, over 80 persons who have sustained injuries in as many minor road accidents during New Year revelry last night have been admitted to CMCH for treatment.
