Vanitha Mohan, Managing Trustee of Siruthuli, planted the 50,000th sapling in 'Kalam Vanam', Anna University Regional campus on Marudhamalai Road here today. 'Kalam Vanam' is being managed by Siruthuli.

“Mostly native varieties suited to the local climatic conditions are planted under this scheme named creation of 'Siruvakki Forest'. Tree saplings belonging to varieties such as Pungan, Poovarasu, Red sandal, Eluppai, Kundrumani, Vakai, Sarakondrai, etc. have been planted in the patch of forest raised here,"said Vanitha Mohan.
“We have set a target of planting one lakh saplings in 'Kalam Vanam' soon," she said.

Under a novel initiative “Vithaiyilirinthu Vriksham” (From seed to tree), school and college students would be trained to raise nurseries of this hardy, local varieties, to meet the target of planting one lakh trees. The students and volunteers would also receive inputs and implements including polythene sapling bags under the scheme.

Sirthuli volunteers and college students took part in the plantation initiative.
