Non-functional lamp posts near TNAU, a stark reminder of official apathy?

The new lamp posts erected on the stretch leading to Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) from Lawley Road junction have remained without bulbs for months together. They stand as stark reminders of official apathy.

Coimbatore, December 28

The new lamp posts erected on the stretch leading to Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) from Lawley Road junction have remained without bulbs for months together. They stand as stark reminders of official apathy.

The ornamental lamp posts, numbering about 35 with “two leaves” shaped hoods, have been installed on Maruthamalai Road and these posts have remained non-functional since installation a year ago.

“Some of the old lamp posts still exist and function, but they do not provide adequate illumination. Hence, accidents have become a frequent occurrence on this stretch, “ said Murugesan who is running a roadside eatery in the area.

As a result, the whole vicinity adjoining the TNAU plunges into darkness after sunset.

Citing lack of funds for inability to provide the bulbs the City Corporation (West zone) officials assured Simplicity that the bulbs would be fitted soon.

“The money spent on these ornamental lamp posts could have been spent for the repair of the old lamp posts which could have provided proper illumination to road users,” said a resident.

“There is no proper planning before spending public money on such fanciful ideas", the resident lamented.

The residents of the area demand that the city corporation expedite measures to provide bulbs for the existing new lamp posts.
