An ornamental variety raised in private gardens, this flower belongs to the cactus family. Prasanna Devi of Muthunagar in kovaigoundanputhur is tending the plant for the past four years and it has proved a hit with the visitors.
Epiphyllum Oxypetalum is the botanical name of Nishaganthi and the flower is also called as night blooming cereus. And it blooms rarely and only at night.
Called Brahma Kamala after Lord Brahma, the Hindu God of creation, it is also a wish-fulfilling flower for it is believed that prayers to Lord Brahma would be granted. It is believed by the Hindus that the shape of reclining Brahma could be seen in the flower.
