Coimbatore, Dec. 26
In a dangerous turn of events, stray dogs that roam around Madukkarai have started hunting down cattle and even straying deer there.
The dogs that are found scavenging near abandoned mines and streets in Madukkarai in large packs often reportedly indulge in chasing cattle and even motorists creating a ruckus in the area for some time now.
According to the farmers in the area, they had recently submitted a petition to the District administration requesting it to put an end to the stray dog menace.
“The dogs come during the night in packs and hunt down cattle. Recently, more than three goats belonging to the same farm were killed by a pack of dogs,” said D. Kumar, a farmer from Kurumbapalayam. More such incidents continue to happen in the nearby farms, he added.
Interestingly, the dogs are seen with collars creating a fear among local people that they have been let loose by owners. Though they seemed friendly with people initially, they have now started chasing motorists and passersby.
“Luckily nobody has been bitten so far by the dogs. But since these dogs have now started moving into residential areas from the mines and dump yards in large numbers, situation might turn worse,” lamented R. Navin, a resident.
Sources in the area have also claimed that the dogs chase and hunt down deers that stray outside the reserve. However, forest personnel have denied that such incidents had been reported.
While this is the case, some people have also claimed that following dogs’ trail, leopards have also started appearing in Madukkarai recently. Forest personnel have denied this too as no sighting of leopard has been reported in the area so far.
