Ostracism for intercaste marriage provokes family to commit suicide, three dead

Tirupur, Dec. 19

Three persons of a family were found dead along the railway track in Udumalpet, Tirupur district.

According to initial reports, the deceased hail from Maraiyur District in Kerala.

Murugan and Muthulakshmi along with their daughter Banupriya were ostracised by the locals after their son Pandiarajan eloped with a girl from a different caste. According to a custom followed by the village in Maraiyur, families will have to leave the village if any of their family member went in for a intercaste marriage.

After Murugan's family was asked to leave the village by their own relatives and neighbours, the whole family was reported to be under immense distress. Hence, Murugan's family decided to take the extreme step of consuming poison, reports say.

The locals who were walking along the railway track were shocked to find three bodies lying next to each other. Upon receiving information, the Udumalpet police have registered a case and have sent the bodies for post-mortem.

The death of three persons of a family due to caste hatred has triggered immense grief among the local people.
