To motivate people to grow their own vegetables at home, the Government of Tamil Nadu has been distributing 'do-it-yourself' (DIY) terrace gardening kits.

According to an official release, the distribution of such DIY kits for the year 2016-17 will commence after receiving applications from people. These kits would contain 10 types of vegetable seeds, coconut husk, seedlings, bio-fertilisers, degradable polythene covers, liquid fertilisers and more.

Those interested are requested to apply to the Horticultural Officer along with a photo copy of their Aadhar card. The kit can be procured at a subsidised rate of Rs. 310 against the original price of Rs. 522. Every eligible person will be provided not more than 5 such kits, added the release.
Since the commencement of the project, several households who have dreamt of cultivating their own vegetables but did not have lands have largely benefited through the DIY scheme. "It not only creates self-sustainability but also paves way for people to be connected with nature." Hence, people are advised to make use of this opportunity to buy quality and comprehensive DIY kits and benefit, said the release.
