Coimbatore, December 14
As a novel initiative, a three-day international conference jointly encompassing the departments of Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics and Microbial Biotechnology on 'Bio Sciences and Bioinformatics' was inaugurated at Bharathiar University.
Former vice- chancellor of University of Madras, S.P. Thyagarajan deliberated that a multidisciplinary approach was necessary to solve mysteries surrounding human health and environment, while inaugurating the event. He added that system biology has found its way into several disciplines and it requires more than one field to solve the problem.

Dr. Shrikant Male, from Yale University, USA, was the chief guest for the day. He spoke about how Human Genomics plays a crucial role in therapeutics.
Prof. A. Ganapathy, vice-chancellor, Bharathiar University, in his presidential address said that the conference would serve as a bridge between young scholars and international scientists.
On the following days, scientists from countries like Australia, Canada, South Korea and Singapore will share their research findings with the participants. This will include fields such as molecular therapeutics, Genomics, Proteomics, Computational Biology, Bioprospecting, Environmental Biology, human health and diseases.
In all, 11 keynote addresses, 35 oral presentations and 128 poster presentations will mark the three-day conference. The event will conclude on December 16.
