Coimbatore, Dec. 13
There has been a marked increase in export of herbal medicines.
This was revealed at an international conference organised by JSS University, Mysuru, at the JSS College of Pharmacy in Udhagamandalam yesterday. The conference was about natural medicines and attended by representatives from across Myanmar, South Africa, Malaysia, Uganda, Germany, and Indian researchers specialising in the field.
Professor Chinnasamy, head of the conference, said: "Over the last decade, natural medicine has been gaining popularity. Natural medicine does not involve extracting medicinal properties from the herb or the fruit alone. It is about putting every part of the plant to use for making medicines." He added that natural medicine is the basis for any form of treatment. Nowadays, medicinal properties are extracted from animals too. Maybe in future, medicines could be produced through gene transfer.

Dr. Narasimhan, a researcher based in Vellore, said: "Of late, Natural medicines have gained importance world over. Therefore, under the 'Make in India' scheme, production of natural medicines has also increased. Medicines produced by specific companies are becoming quite popular in the global markets."
Dr. Dhanapal, Dean JSS College of Pharmacy, Srinivasa Patnala from South Africa, Dr. Raman from University of Madras and Dr. Nirmal Robinson from Germany also addressed the gathering.
