Coimbatore, Dec. 13
After hours of waiting, Forest personnel reunited a month-old elephant calf that was rescued from a canal with its mother.
The calf that had come out with its mother from the Nellimalai Reserve accidentally fell into the canal on Vanabathrakaliyamman Road, near Thekkampatti here, in the early hours yesterday.
This calf is the offspring of a female elephant that was roaming in the area and was guided back into the Reserve yesterday. The animal constantly kept coming back to the Road confusing the forest personnel who guided it back into thick jungle.
It was only later that they found out that the calf was the reason why the mother was reluctant to move out.
The anxious mother had damaged a few vehicles in the morning.
The calf was later rescued and given coconut water and glucose. It was later carried on shoulder by Forest Department staff and let inside the Nellimalai Reserve late in the evening.

However, it took a long time for the mother to come back for her calf and the mother and calf duo were reunited late on Tuesday night.
