An 80-year-old woman was trampled by a wild elephant during a guiding operation at Samichettipalayam, in Periyanaickenpalayam, in the early hours today.
According to Forest department sources, the deceased P. Ramathal was near her house when three elephants entered the village. They were being guided back into the forest by Forest personnel, after they ventured out last night.
Ramathal found herself on the path of the animals and was thrown to the ground and trampled by them around 8 a.m. She was immediately rushed to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) in an ambulance, but was pronounced brought dead by the doctor.
The elephants also injured 55-year-old Thulasiyammal from Kasthuripalayam, before being guided into the Reserve.Forest
Thulasiyammal is being treated at CMCH.
