Coimbatore, Dec. 12
The verdict of the much-awaited 'honour killing' case of Sankar was delivered today. Of the 11 suspects against whom cases were filed, eight were found guilty, out of which six were given death sentences. While the other two also received sentences, three, i.e. Accused no. 2 Annalakshmi (Kausalya's mother), Accused no.3 Pandidurai (Kausalya's uncle) and Accused no. 10 Prasanna were acquitted by the court.
If one thought that the six death sentences would have made Kausalya, widow of Sankar, then the answer is in the negative. Because, even though she was happy with the sentences, it was clear that Kausalya was very unhappy with the three acquittals.
The six who were handed death sentences were Chinnasamy (Accused no.1 and Kausalya's father), Jagadeesan (A4), Manikandan (A5), Selvakumar (A6), Kalai Tamizhvanan (A7), and Madan (A8).
Accused no. 9 Dhanraj received double life term and Manikandan (Accused no. 11) received five years imprisonment.
After the verdict was out, Kausalya told the media: "I am indeed happy with the verdict as most of the suspects have been awarded death sentence. The verdict has affirmed my belief in the judicial system. It was indeed heartening to see that the suspects were detained till the pronouncement of the verdict. I hope this case will set an example for any caste-related and honour killing cases that arise in the future."
Referring to the acquittals, Kausalya said: "I am going to appeal against their acquittal. I will not rest till each of them is brought to trial and justice is delivered."
