Farmers demand full drought relief amount

Coimbatore, December 11

The members of a farmers' association staged a protest at Madathukulam, Tirupur district, demanding sanction of the full amount for drought relief announced by the State Government.

They pointed out that Maduthukulam has been declared a drought-hit area and Rs. 184 crore has been sanctioned in this regard. However, only Rs. 74 crore has reached the farmers of the area. Thus, the farmers staged a protest demanding the sanction of the rest of the amount.

They also demanded the implementation of the 'Anamalai Nallaaru Scheme' and the inauguration of the government hospital at Madathukulam. They pleaded for immediate release of Rs. 25 crore sanctioned for the sugar mill.

They also mentioned that farmers are yet to be compensated under the Crop Insurance scheme and also the price of milk needs to revised.

Around 200 members participated in the protest.
