Coimbatore Corporation orders wedding halls to avoid plastic

Coimbatore, Dec 9: Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has  banned the  use of plastic products by marriage halls.

Following a review meeting with Corporation officials, Corporation Commissioner Dr. Vijay Karthikeyan  has issued an order banning the use of plastic cups, plastic covers and plastic plates at the  marriage halls.

He has also  directed them to segregate the waste at source.

Keeping in view  the indiscriminate dumping of non bio-degradable plastic products and its potential debilitating impact on the environment, the wedding hall owners are directed to segregate bio-degradable and non bio-degradable wastes at source before handing it over to the sanitary workers, the order stated.

The owners of marriage halls have the onus to ensure catering contractors avoided use of plastic products and the segregation of waste was done at source. They should also check water stagnation that could turn breeding grounds for disease spreading mosquitoes, the order stated.

The order also directed marriage halls to keep display boards with a message stating 'We are not using plastic products of any form'

In the event of non-compliance of the  order from the Commissioner, the owners/managements of the marriage hall will be held responsible and a penalty will be levied, the order cautioned.
