Nilgiri mountain railway engine fails; passengers stranded for four hours

Coimbatore, Dec 9:

All the 143 passengers of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) train from Mettupalayam had to face a tough time after it was stranded mid-way due to engine failure.

The NMR starts  from Mettupalayam at 7:20 am and reaches Coonoor at around 10:30 am. Today the train departed on time from Mettupalayam. As the train reached Hillgrove, a sudden flash of fire accompanied with thick smoke, billowed from the engine which made the passengers panic. The driver stopped the train immediately and alerted the NMR personnel at Coonoor.

In the meanwhile, the passengers had to suffer without basic amenities like water and food. After a considerable wait, the train resumed using the relief engine and reached Coonoor at 2:30 pm after a four-hour delay. The steam leakage had caused minor burns to the Loco Pilot Boopathy, Assistant Loco Pilot Sathish and Generator operator Vinodh.
