A priest was allegedly beaten up by a group of Hindu activists during a church service at Mathampalayam here today.

A group of Hindu activists, belonging to RSS and Hindu Munnani, is alleged to have assaulted the priest at a Pentecostal Church situated at Kottapuram on the outskirts of the city. The incident happened when the members of the Church were attending a special Christmas service. The priest who was distributing welfare schemes for the under-privileged was unexpectedly attacked by the group who also damaged the furniture of the Church.

One of the members of the group, Selvaraj resides near the Church. It is alleged that Kavitha and Chandrasekaran, two other members of the group, had plotted to attack the Church.

In the past, a complaint in this regard was lodged on behalf of the Church at the Periyanaickenpalayam (P.N. Palayam) Police station. However no action was initiated against the activists. Had the Police acted upon it, this incident could have been averted, the members of the Church lamented.

A complaint on the incident has been registered. The P.N. Palayam Police are on the look out for the persons involved in the incident.
