Following the demand of the advocates of Samooga Needhi Katchi on December 7, the cadres of Aadhi Tamilar Katchi also have submitted a petition to the Commissioner of Police, K. Periaiah to re-consider their plea for permission to install a statue for Dr. Ambedkar here.
In 2007, permission to install a statue for Dr. Ambedkar at the traffic island near the Red Cross Society was accorded by the city corporation and the district administration. However, the city police denied permission.
"The police officials cite the Supreme Court's order to refrain from installing statues of personalities at public places. However, the Police department should reconsider the request and accord permission to install a statue for the 'Architect of Indian Constitution' in Coimbatore", they demanded.
