"Indian Navy has failed in rescue and search operations in Kanyakumari" - TPDK alleges

Coimbatore, Dec 9

Around 50 members of the Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kalagam (TPDK) courted arrest following the unprecedented protest they staged in front of the Indian Navy in Redfields, here.

"The Indian Navy claims to be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities yet they have failed to save our fisherman who are stuck in the middle of the ocean due to Ockhi flood in Kanyakumari", they alleged.

The protestors also raised slogans against the state and central government for letting down the fisherman community. The slackness showed by the governments have resulted in the death of hundreds of fishermen in Kanyakumari district, they lamented.

"Kanyakumari district should be announced as a national disaster zone and Rs. 20 lakh should be accorded as compensation for each fisherman's family", the TPDK members demanded.
