The recent notification by the State Government to regulate parking fee in cinemas across the State has been welcomed by the theatre goers as they were being fleeced.
The State Government announced that the fee for parking a car/three-wheeler and two-wheelers in cinemas in municipal corporations and special grade municipalities has been fixed at Rs. 20 and Rs.10 respectively.
Whereas in town panchayats and villages,the parking charges have been fixed at Rs. 5 and Rs. 3 respectively for car/three-wheeler and two-wheelers. In other non-special grade municipalities, the rates have been fixed at Rs. 15 and Rs. 7 for car/three-wheeler and two-wheeler parking respectively. However, confusion prevails among the malls with mutiplexes, whether the new rates will be applicable to cinemas in the malls.
Commenting on this, Mr. A.Manoj , social activist , said "Not just parking fare, the movie goers are burdened by the exorbitant food rates there. Though the GO was passed on November 30, the cinemas in Coimbatore are yet to implement the revised parking fares".
He also alleged that during weekeneds and festival days, the parking charges at the cinemas shoot upto even Rs. 150 for four wheelers.
Clarifying their stance, Mr. S. Krishna, Manager of Baba Theatre , said "The revised rates will be implemented once we receive the GO from the District Collectorate."
"It is still unclear if the order would be applicable for malls with multiplexes as well. Going forward, we plan to implement separate rates for those who visit the mall for shopping and the movie goers", said an official from a mall here.
The PIL to regularise the parking fare in cinemas was filed by consumer activist Mr. K. Kathirmathiyon of Coimbatore Consumer Cause in August.
