Coimbatore, Dec. 8
As one of the fast growing and second largest city in the state with a population little more than 16 lakhs, whose numbers keep increasing by the year, existing two abattoirs in the city are not sufficient. The numbers need to be increased along with infrastructural improvements in the existing abattoirs, plead social activists.
They lament that concerns of hygiene in the abattoirs leave a lot to be desired. Hence, they called upon the Corporation to focus on improving the hygiene in the abattoirs so that the meat produced there could be processed and exported in conformity with International standards.
City had four abattoirs at places like Ukkadam, Ganapathy, Singanallur, and Podanur earlier. But at present, only the abattoirs at Ukkadam and Ganapathy are functional with effluent treatment plants. While Podanur abattoir is closed for upgradation, Singanallur is closed due to unhygienic environment for slaughtering goats.

According to Corporation officials, city Corporation had mooted a proposal in 2014 to modernise the four abattoirs and build two more at Thudiyalur and Ukkadam with a hope of getting substantial funds from the National Meat and Poultry Processing Board, a central agency. But the proposal hit a roadblock with central agency having expressed its inability to allocate funds for both modernisation of existing abattoirs and building two more to cater to the needs of growing population in the city.

While expressing satisfaction about the functioning of effluent treatment plants at Ukkadam and Ganapathy abattoirs, Mohammad Samsudeen, a wholesale meat seller, has emphasized the need for mechanized slaughter.
As effluent treatment plants play a pivotal role in ensuring hygiene of the abattoirs and their surroundings, care needs to be taken by the Corporation authorities to ensure its proper maintenance and functioning, he added.
When asked about the need for more abattoirs in the city, Dr. Senthilnathan, Zoo Director, VOC Park, has said improving infrastructure in the existing abattoirs and opening a few more abattoirs are under active consideration and might become a reality soon.

Ganapathy abattoir where cows are slaughtered see at least 80 cows on weekdays and 200 plus on weekends. The Ukkadam slaughter house which is for sheep and goats sees 300 animals on weekdays and 1000 plus on weekends, he added.
