“Liver is a wonderful organ with a good regenerative capacity such that even 1/3rd of a transplanted liver can regenerate to the size of a normal liver in about 3 weeks,” world-renowned liver transplant surgeon, Prof. Mohamed Rela, said here today.
Dr. Rela had performed liver transplantation on a five-day-old newborn, the youngest to have undergone transplantation ever, which won him the Guinness recognition. Prof. Rela's record is yet to be broken.
Dr.Rela was at the Sri Ramakrishna Hospital here to take part in the 11th Dr. B. Krishnaraj Memorial Oration.
Prof. Rela, a hepatopancreatobiliary surgeon and director of Institute of Liver Disease and Transplantation, Gleneagles Global Hospital Groups, shared his memories of liver transplant under the topic “Three decades of my life with liver transplantation”.
According to a press release, he spoke on the inception, evolution and future of liver transplantation both in the UK and India. He also briefed about the various types of liver transplants such as split ,auxiliary and dominos liver transplantation procedures, importantly on pediatric liver transplantation.
Mrs. Parvathi Krishnaraj, Chairperson of Dr. B. Krishnaraj memorial foundation, and Dr. V. Sarveswaran, Head of department of General Surgery, gave away the awards and cash prizes to the doctors.
Dr. P. Sukumaran, Dean, Sri Ramakrishna Hospitals, and Dr. Isaac Christian Moses, Medical Director were present.
