Coimbatore: "The new flyover at Gandhipuram will be named after MGR", announced Chief Minister Edapadi K Palaniswami here today. Works for the metro rail project for Coimbatore would commence shortly, he added speaking at the MGR centenary celebrations.

He made a number of announcements and also rebutted the allegations of opposition parties.
Some of the key announcements he made were:
*The request to construct an overbridge or an underbridge at NSR Road would be considered.
*The Athikadavu-Avinashi project would be implemented at the earliest. Those areas exempted from Avinashi Athikadavu project would be included and a new report would be prepared to include the rest also.
*The plea of the small scale industries to reduce the GST will be presented to the GST council in the forthcoming council meet.
*The VOC Zoo would be revamped at a cost of Rs. 20 crore according to international standards.
* The Siruvani river would be desilted after getting permission from Kerala government,
* Pilloor third drinking water project would be implemented
* Pollachi taluk would be divided into two blocks. And, Anamalais would be declared a separate block.
*12 new floyovers and 5 railway bridges would be constructed. And, service roads would be laid between Mettupalayam and Annur.
*The Coimbatore Medical College Hospital would be transformed into a state-of-the-art facility at Rs. 8.41 crore.
" He reiterated that the death of Ragupathy, the young engineer last week, was not because of the structures put up for the MGR centenary. Enough evidence including CCTV footages from the accident spot have been collected which would be produced to the court, if need be. The issue was blown out of proportion by the DMK MLA .

The CM also showed footages of gigantic banners erected by DMK during the 'Semmozhi Maanadu' held here during 2010. "The whole family of DMK was sitting under those banners during the Tamil conference and it is surprising that Stalin flings allegations now at us".
Minister SP Velumani remarked that "CM has been sanctioning a number of welfare schemes for Coimbatore. And, all our representations for this Kongu belt has been addressed on priority".
The CM announced new schemes worth Rs.1328.95 and distributed several welfare assistance.
