Jayashree Murthy: bringing culture closer to students

Coimbatore, Dec. 3

We always set a plan for our life, study when young then travail and earn to retire at fifty or so to live life comfortably till we die. But not everyone thinks or works like that, some see life an everyday adventure, till death calls it a day.

One such personality is Mrs. Jayashree Murthy, a theatre artist, an avid writer and most importantly a learner even at sixty nine.

Her innate passion for theatre led her to start ‘Sthaayi’- “theatre in education, theatre for education”. The concept was to bring art and culture closer to the lives of the students at an early age and boost their confidence through theatrical performances.

“It was in the year 1969; I completed my education from Mysore University, with specialisation in drama. But at that time I didn’t know if I could make a career out of it. I worked in different fields of writing and advertising though my innate talent lay in acting,” says Mrs. Jayashree, who really put her passion for theatre into practise just three years ago.

She says it is never too late to do what your heart desires. “So what am I ? 69. I am fit and alive, I can’t fear my age and not do what I always wanted to do.”

Through her course she has conducted many workshops for kids and elders to hone their theatrical skills, staged plays for many schools with the students and has directed many plays in the city too. One such story to add to her laurel is one of the plays she directed. It is Rabindranath Tagore’s play - ‘Post Office’ that was aired on Doordarshan.

“I know I am on the other side of life, where my contemporaries prefer to retire and rest. But if I start thinking it is not my age to explore, then when next? As long as I can do what I want to do, I am going to continue doing it. Probably it’s because I am active I am healthy; so why worry about age and retire when the world has so much to offer. Age is just a number let it move up,” says the enthusiastic artiste when questioned if age was ever a barrier to her.

At 65 she started her own enterprise all by herself, at 69 she becomes a kid when teaching the kids how to act, her gusto is a compliment to her age. In fact she in an example for those who have let age stereotype their activities.
