Corporation Commissioner orders to clear all flex and banners from the city

Coimbatore, Dec 1

City Corporation Commissioner Dr. K. Vijayakarthikeyan has instructed all zonal assistant commissioners to immediately remove all banner structures and flex boards erected by political and commercial establishments within the corporation limits.

This order was in response to a Madras High Court's ruling on a PIL to remove all banners and flexes put up in the city. The PIL was filed by DMK MLA N. Karthick who submitted that these structures have been disrupting the traffic and also posing serious threats to the public. The PIL sought removal of such structures pointing out that one such structure on the Avinashi road here was the caused of the death of 32-year-old Ragupathy.

A day after the HC's order, Dr. Vijaykarthikeyan has ordered removal of all such structures from the city with immediate effect.

This order is a major setback for the AIADMK who had spent substantially to erect these structures throughout the city to showcase their political power in connection with the MGR centenary celebrations here scheduled on December 3.

" Had the city Corporation sprung into action earlier and removed unauthorised hoardings put up across the city with a seriousness it truly deserves, death of a young techie would not have happened" claimed RTI activist S.P. Thiyagarajan.

City Corporation authorities have to act swiftly and without any favour when it comes to the removal of illegal hoardings and ensure such avoidable tragic death of young men does not happen in the future, he added.
