Coimbatore, Nov. 29
As many as 2,138 people died in road accidents in 2016 because of mobile usage while driving, pointed out the traffic police at an awareness session here today.
Understanding the need to sensitize the students who are tomorrow's drivers, the city traffic police have chalked out a comprehensive plan to reach out the school students on road safely.
"Targeting the children would be highly fruitful as these students in turn would stress the need on road safety to their parents", said a traffic official.
In this regard, the traffic police personnel interacted with the students of Corporation higher secondary school, Raja street. More than 1000 girl students from the school took part in the awareness session which turned to be an eye-opener.
The traffic personnel revealed that, "17,218 people have died due to accidents in the year 2016. The number of deaths due to not wearing of helmets was 4,091. Around, 6131 people died due to drunken driving, and 2,138 people died due to usage of cell phone while driving."
"Adhering to road safety rules is not a choice; it is mandatory. Each and every student present here should pass these alarming statistics on to your parents and neighbours to caution them on road safety", the police stressed.
They also advised the students to refrain from aggressive driving behaviour for cheap thrill. "Impatience and distractions from cell phones while driving could turn fatal", they iterated.
